Melasma
Melasma is a common form of hyperpigmentation associated with the females hormone estrongen and proestrogen. It is usually found on women who are pregnant (from which its name "pregnancy mask" is derived), taking oral contraceptives or undergoing menopausal hormone replacement therapy, as the fluctuating hormone levels therein trigger the hyperpigmentation. Melasma, also known as Chloasma, commonly appears as brown patches or spots on the sides of the face, upper lip, nose and chin. Young women with darker complexions are most at risk for melasma, but any women is at risk.
Melams is commonly treatment with lightening agents and exfoliation, often in conjunction. In more severe cases, topical steroidal creams and even laser treatments may be recommended by your dermatologist.
